So, you know how about a year ago Photobucket changed their Terms of Service so that users had to pay $400 a year for their images to be visible anywhere other than Photobucket itself, and sometimes it wasn't even visible there?

And you know that made me upset because even though I've never used Photobucket for image hosting, a lot of things online I wanted to catch up on someday have used Photobucket, and that would mean I'd never get to finish catching up on them?

And you know how I've made various jabs at Photobucket because of it such as claiming that Photobucket managed to even take down my userpics on LJ but not on DW (or vice versa depending on what site you read my April Fools entries on) and being like "These people think Quidd is the worst company ever - haven't they ever heard of Photobucket?!"

So today I was working on fixing my old entries, and I got to one* that does have an image hosted on Photobucket in it (because it was uploaded by glowing_dragon, not me), and... IT SHOWS UP.

Then I went to a couple of other places on the Internet that I'd been to before that I knew had Photobucket images in them because they became broken when Photobucket changed their TOS.

THOSE IMAGES SHOW UP NOW TOO. (I haven't seen any "3rd-party hosting disabled" placeholder images, anyway - images that users have deleted entirely are obviously still gone.)

I need to ask...

Did, uh...

DID PHOTOBUCKET FINALLY COME TO THEIR SENSES?! I'd Google it to find out for myself but I'm too afraid of finding more online drama that'll upset me. (Yes, even when I thought Photobucket was the one company that actually deserved the hate it was getting for changing their TOS, I still couldn't always bear to read it.)

Even the thought that Photobucket MIGHT have realized their mistake is so surreal... I feel like I'm dreaming. I might as well act like this is all a dream, but I can't do that right now because I'm supposed to take Enya to see another Enya perform live at 103:206 PM. :P

*Note: yes, that entry mentions that I was doing an MS Paint meme but I gave up on that years ago because I procrastinated it for so long and felt overwhelmed by it. :(

I googled for you and they decided to go with pricing. So basically 2GB per month is $4.03 billed for one year. Then they have 50gb for $5.83 per month billed annually and lastly 2TB for 10.33 per month but billed annually. That was their greedy solution. They do offer a free plan or pay by month options as well. The free plan does not include 3rd party but all the others do. I hope this helps to answer your question :)

Wasn't it $400/year at one point? If so, looks like they reduced it to a reasonable enough price that more people are willing to pay for it. I'm still not gonna use Photobucket myself because ScrapBook and its DW counterpart work for me, but I'm glad lots of images that used to be broken are back now :D Less greedy than they were before is good enough for me :)

Thanks for looking it up for me!

Just curious... when did the new pricing options go into effect? It's weird to think that I may have been like "Haven't those people who hate Quidd ever heard of Photobucket?!" after Photobucket reduced the prices to be much more reasonable.
Jul. 17th, 2018 09:23 pm (UTC)
You're welcome. I was curious about it too because I'd seen somewhere that they were going to reduce the price.

I'm not going to use Photobucket either because I've been using ScrapBook (and the DW version of ScrapBook) all this time and am perfectly happy with it. (Am kind of worried I might run out of storage space on the DW version though...)

The reason the Photobucket TOS change last year upset me so much was because other people's images, on things I wanted to catch up on, were broken because of it. So I'm glad most of those are back now. :D

My userpics never became broken because of Photobucket, actually! Yes, I once claimed they did, but that was an elaborate April Fools' prank - and last September LJ had that glitch where userpics (and, less frequently, other images) wouldn't show up in entries, but they'd still show up as proper userpics, and LJ fixed that glitch relatively quickly - three weeks seemed like a lot at the time, but it could have been worse! :)

No, no, no - those are leftover because for April Fools' Day I uploaded multiple copies of the Photobucket placeholder image (resized to the sizes of all my normal userpics) and moved the keywords to them for the day to make it look like my 116 "main" userpics were taken down, then moved the keywords back the next day. Now that the prank is over, I still haven't gotten around to removing the temporary replacements, but no keywords are assigned to them. :P

Sorry, that was confusing! :)

I got an email from them on May 30 stating that, yes, they did come to their senses. I was going to post about it, but it wasn’t really important to me. Perhaps your current email address isn’t in their files or you would have received it, too.

Jul. 17th, 2018 11:18 pm (UTC)
Wow, May 30? So I was like "obviously these people who hate Quidd so much and think they're the greediest company ever have never heard of Photobucket" over a month after Photobucket did in fact come to their senses? Wow.

I've never used Photobucket at any point - the only reason their TOS change last year impacted me was because other people's images that I was hoping to get to see eventually became broken because of it. So of course none of my email addresses, current or otherwise, are in their files. :)

After many lost years, I had just reopened my Photobucket archives to repost pictures of the past paying only the amount needed to go ad free, because, seriously, those ads were causing time-consuming breakdown. At the point of their new-found greed, I canceled even that and never returned to the site. Surprisingly, though, they never blocked out any of my images on LJ in all that time and even allowed me to post a few more.

Since I've never used Photobucket myself but visited many places on the Internet where people did, all I know is: lots of Photobucket images that I thought I'd never get to see are back for whatever reason and I'm happy about that. :)
Jul. 21st, 2018 08:08 pm (UTC)
I'm happy, too. :)
Jul. 18th, 2018 02:06 am (UTC)
Oh, hi! Yeah, I noticed the pics showing up a while ago, but didn't bother to look into it. I see your friends have come through and done it for me! (to be honest, I just checked my friends page now) Good to know they kind of came to their senses. Now I'm Googling it myself. :D
Jul. 18th, 2018 09:45 am (UTC)

Off-topic: did you see any of my entries about the Quidd stuff? I still worry about that sometimes and I think it might help to hear your take on it. :)
Jul. 18th, 2018 03:06 pm (UTC)
I did see the entries about the Quidd stuff. I'm not sure that worrying about it a whole lot is healthy per se, but I can understand why you would.
Jul. 18th, 2018 11:12 pm (UTC)
Yeah... I just can't keep myself from worrying about it. It gets easier whenever there hasn't been a news post in a while (because every time Quidd changes ANYTHING there's tons of negativity about it, even if they listened to a previous request), but that's not very often because Quidd makes news posts a LOT. I think there's been like four surveys, six or seven new fandoms, and many other news updates just since I joined! And it's not easy to avoid reading them since they're usually the first thing that shows up when I start the app. :(

They haven't changed their minds. There is an extension you can download to override it. Several of my graphics ladies and their friends posted about it and tried to make sure everyone knew about it. All you have to do is download the extension and you will see all of PB stuffs. *nods* If you want to use photofuckit, you still have to pay, and they are still ridiculous. x(

Jul. 19th, 2018 02:13 am (UTC)
If they haven't changed their minds, then how is it that so many images that became broken when Photobucket changed their TOS are suddenly showing up again? At least for me? Without me having the extension or even knowing there was one?

I did hear that while 3rd-party hosting is still not free on Photobucket, they reduced the price, so I still think it's either that more people are willing to pay for it now or hosting images on other sites is no longer "3rd-party hosting".

And no, I'm still not going to use Photobucket myself - ScrapBook is fine by me. I'm just glad lots of other people's images are showing up again, no matter what the reason is. :D

I read it as you could suddenly see other folks' things. I figured they had downloaded the extension. Sorry!

Yup, still hate 'em. x(

Jul. 19th, 2018 09:30 pm (UTC)
I actually did mean I can suddenly see other people's things. I still have no idea if that's because they downloaded the extension or they paid for third-party hosting; either way, since I haven't seen the third-party placeholder image once since the day I posted this entry, that would imply that every Photobucket image I've seen (that wasn't deleted entirely) since the day I posted this was by someone who either paid for third-party hosting or downloaded the extension. Either way it seems like a pretty big coincidence...

I don't hate Photobucket as much now if it's true that they reduced the price for third-party hosting - I just still like ScrapBook better. :)

If I had to pick six words to describe myself, I would panic and ask someone for help because I am so downright random and weird that there is no possible way to describe myself or my journal in only six words.

So here's a list of things you'll probably see in this journal, in no particular order:
- Posts about my life
- Posts about my worrying about being disliked for any number of reasons
- Posts about the fact that I'm trying to fix all the things that are messed up in my LJ and DW and catch up on lots of websites that I'm behind on reading
- Backups of my posts on Miiverse now that Miiverse is discontinued... so if you want to know what some random guy was saying about New Super Mario Bros. U or Nintendo Land five years ago, this is the journal for you :P
- Quizzes and surveys and such
- References to random things I'm obsessed with
- Whatever else I feel like posting

Some of the random things I'm obsessed with are:
- LiveJournal (obviously)
- Looking back at things that were made years ago... old posts on LJ, etc.
- Math
- Weird dreams
- Video games (mostly Mario, Super Smash Bros., Kid Icarus, and Chip's Challenge)
- Video game music
- Homestar Runner
- Enya, my favorite singer and biggest celebrity crush
- Too many comics/webcomics to name... Garfield, mezzacotta, Terror Island, and Circle Versus Square might be the ones I'm the MOST obsessed with though. Oh, and Super Mario Maker Crash Course - that counts as a comic, right? It certainly counts as something I'm obsessed with :P
- Speaking of Super Mario Maker Crash Course, my biggest *fictional* crush is Mary O. Yes, I have a crush on the guide to a video game MANUAL. I'm so weird...

For a (hopefully) complete list of interests and Q&A about me, visit my profile. :) (Which is still in need of an update...)

This journal is semi-friends-only, but there's not much rhyme or reason to which entries are public and which ones aren't...
