Okay, it's become ABUNDANTLY clear that EVERY community I've ever posted in on LJ is probably going to be gone by the end of the month, so this is definitely the best time (unless I can go back in time and do this several years ago...) for me to finally start creating a backup account on DreamWidth.

Dear owners/maintainers of _dreams_, add_me, asperger, corrupted_wish, goodbandnames, iwish, newfriends, omgrandom, randomthought, strongbademail, suggestions, synaesthesis, the_number_206, and even thequestionclub and ask_me_anything since I know I posted in at least one of those two (and also any community that I forgot I've posted in):

The sky is falling,

Before I create a DW account, though, I still have a few more questions:

- What happens to the userpics on my entries if I start having them be automatically copied over to DW before I upload the same userpics to DreamWidth? Will the keywords still be there so that if I upload userpics to DreamWidth with the same keywords, they'll show up where they're supposed to? (Does DW even use userpic keywords?)
- Can entries that are automatically transferred from LJ to DW be edited manually when they're on DreamWidth? Because I might have to if something in them doesn't get copied over.
- I want to backup my entries in my own journal AND my entries in LJ communities to DreamWidth so the latter won't be lost if when more communities I posted in disappear. I'm so desperate that I'll even copy every community entry over one by one if I have to (which I will have to for autism, anyway - via email notifications about comments on my entries there, because luckily I still have those), but is there any way to have that automatically be done? And if so, will the comments stay there?
- Which of the communities I mentioned do you think has the highest chance of being deleted anytime soon? That way I can start with those.

EDIT: Created my account on DW - my username is still matt1993. (Is there a way to link to a DW account from LJ or vice versa, like with the <lj> tag?) Anyway, I'm still setting up a lot of things on DW, but if I list you as a friend on LJ and I know your DreamWidth username, I added you there as well. If I didn't add you yet, then add me on DreamWidth and I'll add you back (if you have different LJ and DW usernames, tell me your DW username through LJ or vice versa). :)

If you upgrade your DW account prior to a Premier/Seed account, then you will have room for 250 icons. The next level down will only avail you room for 100 icons. I'm not sure what will happen to the other 101 icons. I imagine that they would go to /dev/null if you didn't have your account already upgraded.

I went ahead and upgraded my account before I started copying my entries over. And I finally saw in the FAQ that if I did exceed the limit by copying userpics over from LJ, only my default userpic would've been copied over until I redid the transfer after upgrading my account.

No. It will only backup your complete journal. That is, it will only backup matt1993. It will not backup any community because community accounts are not personal accounts. DW will backup a personal account. DW will backup a community, but ONLY if you are a maintainer or owner of said community. It is spelled out here: https://www.dreamwidth.org/support/faqbrowse?faqid=230

I see. I guess I'll have to copy the community entries individually... after I look over the most visible parts of my DreamWidth account (profile, recent entries, my glossary entry, etc.) to make sure they look okay. My LJ was already kind of a mess that I've been having to fix a lot of things on - now I have to do the same thing on DW. :(

Glad that I could be of assistance! :-) If you have any other questions, feel free to keep 'em comin'.

Thanks! I do have another question - when you look at my journal or profile on DreamWidth, do you immediately see anything that doesn't look right?

From a technical perspective, everything looks like it should. I've noticed little weird things after I did the import, but they're pretty minor that I don't see them being a problem. Aesthetically, it looks great. On the security side of things, I don't understand why you insist on keeping an open journal for the whole world to read, but I guess that's just a personal preference. :-)

Over the past few years I've been gradually making more of my entries friends-only, but I try to still have plenty of public entries as well. All of my entries are at the same security levels on DW that they are on LJ, right?

And I have noticed that videos embedded in my entries are removed in the DW versions, so I'll have to edit those entries to link to the videos instead.

I'm pretty sure the security levels remain the same, yeah.

Ooooh, that's a great point! I did not realize that the embedded videos didn't make it over.

I had noticed that some of my entries that were friends-only on LJ still were friends-only on DW, so I wasn't sure if you were asking why I would have public entries at all or if you saw a friends-only entry become public and were pointing that out. Guess it's the former, then. :)

I asked because before I granted you access and followed you, I could see a lot of your entries. I didn't mean to be rude or anything like that, but for completion purposes, I thought you'd appreciate it. :-)

My DreamWidth

Latest Month

October 2019

If I had to pick six words to describe myself, I would panic and ask someone for help because I am so downright random and weird that there is no possible way to describe myself or my journal in only six words.

So here's a list of things you'll probably see in this journal, in no particular order:
- Posts about my life
- Posts about my worrying about being disliked for any number of reasons
- Posts about the fact that I'm trying to fix all the things that are messed up in my LJ and DW and catch up on lots of websites that I'm behind on reading
- Backups of my posts on Miiverse now that Miiverse is discontinued... so if you want to know what some random guy was saying about New Super Mario Bros. U or Nintendo Land five years ago, this is the journal for you :P
- Quizzes and surveys and such
- References to random things I'm obsessed with
- Whatever else I feel like posting

Some of the random things I'm obsessed with are:
- LiveJournal (obviously)
- Looking back at things that were made years ago... old posts on LJ, etc.
- Math
- Weird dreams
- Video games (mostly Mario, Super Smash Bros., Kid Icarus, and Chip's Challenge)
- Video game music
- Homestar Runner
- Enya, my favorite singer and biggest celebrity crush
- Too many comics/webcomics to name... Garfield, mezzacotta, Terror Island, and Circle Versus Square might be the ones I'm the MOST obsessed with though. Oh, and Super Mario Maker Crash Course - that counts as a comic, right? It certainly counts as something I'm obsessed with :P
- Speaking of Super Mario Maker Crash Course, my biggest *fictional* crush is Mary O. Yes, I have a crush on the guide to a video game MANUAL. I'm so weird...

For a (hopefully) complete list of interests and Q&A about me, visit my profile. :) (Which is still in need of an update...)

This journal is semi-friends-only, but there's not much rhyme or reason to which entries are public and which ones aren't...
