Yesterday, the fire alarm at the hotel I'm staying at went off for no apparent reason. Not only that, but it took way too long for me to get out of the room and I didn't have the common sense to head for the stairs instead of the elevator. Had there really been a fire, I probably would've died even if the fire were all the way on the other side of the hotel (knowing me, I'd inevitably somehow end up there or accidentally do something that somehow makes it come to my side of the building). :(

Amazingly, the fire alarm managed to out-scary every single scary dream I've had, even the "somethinged to hell" one...

Gah, that is frightening! I would probably be the first to die in a fire, too. My survival instinct is next to none, and sense of direction is even worse. Like you, I'd run towards it.

I'll pray for us. Actually, I won't, because I'm not religious, but whatever.

Thanks for the fact that you'd pray for me if you were religious, then :)

I have a good sense of direction, but not a good survival instinct...

I don't think I can read a map. I am directionally inept, if there is such a thing.

I always head for the elevator, first, too. Strange. I think it's a habit that a lot of people have.
Mar. 7th, 2011 03:14 am (UTC)
I guess.

Trying to get out while an alarm is going off and I take wrong turn after wrong turn sounds exactly like some of my dreams... I sympathize - it sucks even more when you're awake.
Mar. 7th, 2011 03:17 am (UTC)
Exactly. It doesn't help that fire alarms sound so scary to begin with, either.

Why can't the alarm be an Enya-like voice saying, "Hey, there's a fire! You oughta get out!" or something like that so that at least it's slightly less scary? :P

Awww I'm sorry you were so scared. Someone should have been there to help you.

But yes - the stairs are always first choice when you hear a fire alarm.

Mom was there, but she was nearly as panicked as I was. She does have much more survival instinct than me, though - otherwise, I would have actually made it to the elevator.

Most times I've experienced fire alarms there's never been a fire so I would probably be a bit too nonchalant about it if there actually was one.

Mar. 9th, 2011 03:13 am (UTC)
Since you said most times, does that mean there was actually a fire at least once? If so, how did you handle it?

I've never actually had a fire either. There was one time in fourth grade that I thought there was a real fire because the fire alarm went off without anyone telling me (at the time, I used to have to have someone tell me in advance that there would be a fire drill so I wouldn't have a meltdown when it happened), so I was all panicked and everything, but then after what seemed like forever, it turned out that the heat from the pizzas (we were going to have a pizza party) set off the fire alarm. LOL

Sorry that was misleading - the fires were very small like waste paper bin fires at school for example so nowhere near where I was and had no effect on me personally.

Mar. 11th, 2011 10:46 pm (UTC)
Ah, I see. Thanks for clarifying!

How did the wastepaper bins catch fire, though?

One time a kid did it on purpose with a cigarette lighter or when people hadn't put their cigarettes out properly.

Why didn't I notice this comment until just now?

Well, I'm home now, but Mom & I were staying in a hotel as part of our recent college visit.

how many colleges have you applied to?

I have no idea - I've lost count. But at least 11.

do you have any majors in mind?

Definitely mathematics and/or computer science :)

Comment below originally by thunderbottled, whose comments somehow get deleted in this journal for no apparent reason. (I promise you, I am not deleting them; why would I delete a comment just to put it back?)

Hey, what the hell. I was pretty sure I replied here, but I don't see my comment anymore. Hmph. Unless it IS here, and it's somehow invisible to me. That'd be a mindfuck (pardon the French).

I wanted to say that I know EXACTLY what you're talking about. I have exactly zero survival instinct, and an even more inadequate sense of direction. Like you, I'd most likely run TOWARDS the fire.

I pray for both of us.

Okay, actually I won't because I'm not religious (hope that doesn't offend you), but...eh.

No worries, it doesn't :)

If I had to pick six words to describe myself, I would panic and ask someone for help because I am so downright random and weird that there is no possible way to describe myself or my journal in only six words.

So here's a list of things you'll probably see in this journal, in no particular order:
- Posts about my life
- Posts about my worrying about being disliked for any number of reasons
- Posts about the fact that I'm trying to fix all the things that are messed up in my LJ and DW and catch up on lots of websites that I'm behind on reading
- Backups of my posts on Miiverse now that Miiverse is discontinued... so if you want to know what some random guy was saying about New Super Mario Bros. U or Nintendo Land five years ago, this is the journal for you :P
- Quizzes and surveys and such
- References to random things I'm obsessed with
- Whatever else I feel like posting

Some of the random things I'm obsessed with are:
- LiveJournal (obviously)
- Looking back at things that were made years ago... old posts on LJ, etc.
- Math
- Weird dreams
- Video games (mostly Mario, Super Smash Bros., Kid Icarus, and Chip's Challenge)
- Video game music
- Homestar Runner
- Enya, my favorite singer and biggest celebrity crush
- Too many comics/webcomics to name... Garfield, mezzacotta, Terror Island, and Circle Versus Square might be the ones I'm the MOST obsessed with though. Oh, and Super Mario Maker Crash Course - that counts as a comic, right? It certainly counts as something I'm obsessed with :P
- Speaking of Super Mario Maker Crash Course, my biggest *fictional* crush is Mary O. Yes, I have a crush on the guide to a video game MANUAL. I'm so weird...

For a (hopefully) complete list of interests and Q&A about me, visit my profile. :) (Which is still in need of an update...)

This journal is semi-friends-only, but there's not much rhyme or reason to which entries are public and which ones aren't...
