Writer's Block: Singles Awareness Day @ 04:48 pm

Right now I am annoyingly: hopeful hopeful

Do you love or hate Valentine’s Day?
I know practically everyone else on LJ disagrees with me on this, but even though I'm single, I love Valentine's Day! I understand why some people might be depressed about being single on Valentine's Day, but personally, just the idea of romance in general makes me feel happy, even if I haven't gotten to experience it yet. In fact, on a more general scale, while some depressed people might not be able to stand being around cheery people, that's not the case with me even when I am depressed - instead, their cheer just rubs off on me and I feel better.

That, and Valentine's Day candy is just plain delicious.

Of course, I'm only 18, so I might not be the same way if I'm still single in 10-30 years, but for now, I'd like to enjoy Valentine's Day while I can, please.

*hits the post button and prepares for impending flame wars...*

I'm not going to flame you. I'm single and don't hate Valentine's Day. I actually heard that the holiday was originally for single people. I like chocolate and flowers and hearts so the holiday is fun for that reason. I could do without jewelry commercials that tell me I need a significant other who gives me diamonds to be happy, though.

I can agree with that! It annoys me when people hate on Valentine's Day in its entirety just because their relationship (or lack thereof) isn't like such commercials.

Come to think of it, if someone's depressed about being single on Valentine's Day because of commercials that say that they have to be in love to be happy, then that means they actually believe what the commercials they hate so much are telling them. Ironic, isn't it?

Hope I'm making sense here rather than attending to my royal duties as the King of Stupid Comments...

EDIT: Apparently I was indeed "fulfilling" my royal duties, as originally I said that instead of "attending to", which probably would make more sense.

I love Valentine's Day and I always did while single too. Then again, I love holidays in general. Being bitter does nothing but suck the joy out of your life. </p>

I get tired of all the negativity around the holiday personally.

Me too. The only thing I hate about Valentine's Day is how bitter people can get about it for no reason...

I used to love Valentine's Day, when I was younger and it was all about giving presents and being extra nice to people I liked. Now, it seems like a tug-of-war between the people who complain constantly about the holiday (like my brother) and companies that promote depressingly unhealthy relationship stereotypes to make a quick buck. It feels like being trapped between weird expectations and hostility, with huge potential for misunderstandings. It just kind of makes me sad now.

It probably doesn't help that the last time I wished someone a happy Valentine's Day, he freaked out and banned me because I had said it on his blog, where everyone could see it. Nothing says you're nothing quite like being someone's embarrassing little secret...

But I really like the day after Valentine's Day, when the very pretty flowers are on sale and I can maybe afford to get some, which are usually out of my financial reach. Pretty, fragrant flowers make any day nice, especially at the tail end of winter, before things start blooming. :)

Yeah... As I said, the only thing I hate (or even dislike) about Valentine's Day is the fact that every year, I see less love and romance and more complaining. I know romance is a bit cliché, but imagining loving couples holding hands or hugging or something always makes me feel a little happier (which I really need whenever anti-valentine negativity makes me depressed). Valentine's Day would be much easier to enjoy if people didn't care so much about commercialism and just, well, enjoyed it.

Reminds me of the Valentine's Day xkcd:

I agree with you on one thing: Valentine's candy (especially the chocolate) is very good indeed. I hope you enjoy Valentine's Day as long as you can. Take care of yourself!

Thanks :)

I just wish I didn't feel depressed every time I see the slightest bit of Valentine's Day negativity now... :(
